The Used EV Buying Guide
Why the used market is where the value is right now, the parking-lot battery math that beats any report, and what actually belongs on your inspection list — written while shopping the used market ourselves.

Full disclosure: we're not writing this from the sidelines. One of our vehicles just reached the end of its lease, and we've been shopping the used EV market ourselves. So this guide is current, field-tested, and a little opinionated.
Why used is where the value is
EVs depreciate hard, which stings first owners and rewards second ones. And right now there's a supply wave working in your favor: a huge number of leases signed in 2023–24 — when leasing an EV was unusually attractive — are coming back to market. For the most budget-conscious buyers, this is the place to look.
The closer you are to a major metro, the more deals you'll find — especially if you don't need 300+ miles of range. But the rule for used vehicles doesn't change for EVs: do your research and come informed about the vehicle and market prices.
(And if you're set on a new EV? Consider leasing — for most models the depreciation is real, with exceptions worth researching brand by brand.)
The parking-lot battery check
Recurrent is the best tool out there for battery health reports — ask the seller for one; it has real value. But when you're standing at the vehicle, bring your calculator, because the car itself will tell you more:
- Look at the dash: note the battery percentage and the estimated miles showing.
- Divide miles by percentage, times 100. Example: showing 80% and 230 miles → 230 ÷ 80 × 100 = 287.5 miles of full-charge range.
- Compare that to the original EPA sticker range. If it was 324 miles: 287.5 ÷ 324 = 88.7% of original range.
The warranty transfers — but verify it
Battery and drivetrain warranties are specific to each manufacturer, but they generally transfer to a second owner if the vehicle is still inside the window (commonly 8 years / 100,000 miles). Verify it for any vehicle you're looking at — don't trust the dealer to know or to tell you.
The port question: buy the adapter, take the deal
We're mid-transition from CCS to NACS, and I would not be overly concerned about it. Plan to invest in an adapter. If a CCS vehicle is a much better deal, even the OEM adapters are worth the cost when you're saving a few thousand dollars on the car itself. By 2028–2030 this may matter more, but I don't know of any charging networks rushing to convert their CCS plugs over — those cars will have places to charge for years.
Where to buy (and the three-test-drive rule)
I don't think any one venue is best — dealer, online, private party — it's about your comfort level with the purchase options available today.
But if you have never driven an EV: go to a physical location and test-drive at least three different EVs before you buy anything, anywhere. When we got our second EV, we drove almost every model in the class we were shopping. It took time not everyone has — but a couple of test drives cost nothing but your time, and they'll inform even a fully-online purchase if that's the route you take.
The used-EV inspection list
- Tires, tires, tires!!! The one maintenance cost that's bitten us in years of EV ownership. Check tread on all four and price a replacement set for that model before you negotiate.
- The battery math above, plus a Recurrent report from the seller if you can get one.
- Account transfer. If the vehicle is from an EV-native brand, ask about the process for transferring the vehicle's account/app to you — the car's software experience runs through it.
- The charging cord. Confirm what's included; a missing cord or adapter is real money (see the home charging guide).
Who should skip the older bargains
Early, low-range models can be great around-town cars in smaller cities and towns. If you take road trips, or you live in a large metro that you regularly traverse, avoid them — unless the price truly offsets the more extensive charging and slower charging speeds you'll deal with. You can save on these models, but you will pay in time during ownership.
How ours went
We just bought a used EV. The lease experience pushed us back toward owning — we didn't want to be constantly conscious of mileage caps — and we didn't want to pay new prices. We got a decent vehicle with reasonable range at a price that fit our budget right now. Deals are out there. With gas prices staying persistently high, I don't expect them to last long.
