How EV Charging Works: A Plain-English Guide

Wall plug, dryer plug, or road-trip fast charger — how EV charging actually works, what people get wrong about it, and what it took me a winter road trip to learn.

Here's the mental model I give people: charging an EV is like charging your phone or your laptop. You're going to need a special cord — one probably comes with the car, and if it breaks, you'll have to replace it. Some businesses have plugs that let you top up while you're there, which is roughly the public charging experience. And then there are the big fast chargers, where the phone metaphor starts to fall apart a little — it's still just plugging in your vehicle, but it's more complex and more complicated. We'll get to that.

The three levels, translated

Every charging guide recites "Level 1, Level 2, Level 3" and then buries you in kilowatt tables. Here's the version that actually sticks:

  • Level 1 is a wall plug. You can plug in anywhere there's an outlet — a 20-amp circuit, preferably.
  • Level 2 is a dryer plug. A special plug for that special cord your EV came with.
  • Level 3 — DC fast charging — is commercial-industrial electrical distribution. Nothing you could imagine in a residential setting. These are for long road trips, or for the urgent moment when you forgot to charge.

Now, the part most guides won't tell you straight: people get Level 2 wrong in both directions.

A lot of people think a Level 2 charger is a fast charger. It's faster than a wall plug, sure — but it's not really a fast charger in your home. You have to think of it as overnight charging, not "I'll pop home for an hour and charge up." Wake up in the morning, the car is ready to go. For daily driving, that's all you need. But if you're picturing a gas-station stop in your garage, Level 2 will disappoint you.

Meanwhile, people underestimate fast chargers. They're rapidly evolving, and I think we'll get to speeds where a road-trip charge is basically indistinguishable from stopping to pump gas — that's already a five-to-ten minute errand either way. But you'll pay a premium for that speed. Fast charging is for road trips you plan and budget for, not everyday use — unless your circumstances require it and you're financially able and willing to pay for it.

Why fast charging slows down near full

Batteries can only take so much power. Once they reach a certain point, charging them too fast becomes dangerous and damaging — so somewhere around 75–80%, the charger slows way down. That's for everyone's safety, to protect the equipment, and to keep your vehicle reliable long-term.

Which brings up the famous "only charge to 80%" advice. My take: it's situational. It depends on your battery chemistry, your personal circumstances, and how much mileage you need when you leave the house. Do the research on your vehicle up front — it pays off in how your whole relationship with charging goes.

The plug situation in 2026 (it's simpler than it looks)

  • NACS — the Tesla-style plug — is the standard everybody has agreed to going forward. Manufacturers are transitioning to it model year by model year.
  • CCS is what most non-Tesla EVs used before 2026, and a significant number still ship with it. These cars aren't going anywhere — they'll be charging on public networks (and adapters) for years.
  • CHAdeMO was basically the old Nissan Leaf. Nissan skipped CCS entirely — the 2026 Leaf went straight to NACS.

Tesla's charging network has begun opening up to non-Tesla vehicles, but only select models they've already integrated with, so the car and the charger software can talk to each other.

The practical bottom line: know what port your car has, and make sure whatever driving app you use — even the one built into the vehicle — knows it too, so it never routes you to a charger you can't use. For home charging this barely matters. For public charging, it's everything.

What both sides get wrong

The skeptics think charging takes too long. They're arguing against the infrastructure of five years ago and don't understand modern public charging — which, while not always ideal or even pleasant, is definitely adequate for people who show up equipped and organized.

The evangelists underestimate the effort that "equipped and organized" actually takes for someone coming from a gasoline car. With gas, you just know there will be stations along the way. With an EV road trip, you plan where your electrons come from. That's a real behavioral shift, and waving it away doesn't help anybody.

The Nebraska story

Our first big road trip was Colorado to Iowa, in winter, about six months after we got our long-range EV. I charged to 100% before we left and had a healthy dose of range anxiety anyway. We made it all the way to Nebraska before we needed a charge — not desperate, but we needed it.

The station was in the corner of a big-box store parking lot, no affiliation with the store. Just a big electrical box with a digital screen and a phone number. No attendant, nobody. The connection failed — "unplug and retry." I unplugged. I retried. Nothing. It's cold, it's windy, my wife and our dogs are in the car, the car is loaded with holiday gifts, there's a line forming for four chargers, and mine is the broken one.

My lovely wife got customer service on the phone, they reset the system remotely, and we got our charge — at a very pricey rate per kilowatt-hour — and made it to the next station. Frustrating? Incredibly. Anxiety-inducing for a first big road trip? Absolutely.

I tell that story for two reasons. One: that's the state of public charging — workable, improving, and still sometimes a big electrical box with a phone number. It's actually what motivated me to get into this industry and work on making this transition easier. Two: we still made it, the dogs were fine, and every road trip since has been smoother.
